Scotland's food scene is huge and diverse, and the Daily Record's Restaurant of the Week series aims to shine a light on many of the country's lesser known eateries.

Our latest pick is a hidden gem Thai restaurant in Perth that was once visited by none other than Ewan McGregor.

Mae Ping Thai Dining is a family-owned and run Thai restaurant and takeaway located on South Street in the heart of the city .

Dating back to 1998, the eatery is headed by a father-and-daughter team and specialises in freshly cooked curry and stir fry dishes that are made to order.

In 2024, staff and diners were shocked when Trainspotting and Star Wars star Ewan McGregor headed to Mae Ping Thai Dining for a sit-down meal.

According to the restaurant, McGregor and the other diners at his table were satisfied with their meal and even left a large tip.

Speaking to The Courier , Nutcharee Buncharoen from Mae Ping Thai Dining said: "When he came in I asked if he had been here before because I thought I recognised him.

He had a massive smile and giggled.

He said ‘no I’ve never been here before’.

"I thought he was maybe just from somewhere out of town because he had a strong Scottish accent.

He was really lovely but didn’t tell me he was in Star Wars.

My colleagues who were looking after his table said they were lovely and they left a generous tip.

"My mum’s friend, who was at the table next to him, messaged my mum later on asking if I knew who I was serving.

I’m just gutted we didn’t get any photos or autographs of him—it just didn’t click.

I was gutted but proud, we don’t usually get Hollywood Stars coming into the restaurant." Among the starters on offer at Mae Ping Thai Dining are king prawn tempura, Thai-style deep fried spare ribs, and homemade Thai fishcakes.

The restaurant also serves up Thai soup with imported spices, Thai salads, sweet potato fritters, and homemade vegetable spring rolls.

In terms of larger plates, customers can enjoy various curries and stir fry dishes that vary in their spiciness.
