The funeral of Irish Olympian and European gold medallist Ciara Mageean will take place today in Co Down following her death on Sunday.

Mageean died at the age of 34 after a battle with bowel cancer following her announcement in July of last year that she had started treatment for the disease.

Earlier this year, she shared the news of her diagnosis of stage-four cancer of the bowel, with a likely terminal diagnosis.

Tuesday’s farewell to the 2024 European 1500m champion will begin with a private gathering at her parents’ house on Ballyphilip Road in Portaferry, Co Down, which will depart at 1.45pm for funeral mass at 2pm at St Patrick’s Church in Ballyphilip.

Burial will be held in the adjoining cemetery following the ceremony.

Her family has requested family flowers only, with donations to Bowel Cancer Ireland and Marie Curie.

Mageean had been widely recognised in recent months for the honesty and bravery with which she spoke about her cancer diagnosis and the positivity she maintained in the face of such shocking news.

Tributes have flooded in from far and wide, from both within and outside the Irish and international athletics communities.

British runner and close friend of Mageean, Phily Bowden, paid tribute on Monday to “the friend who was always there for me whatever I needed”.

Mageean served as a bridesmaid at Bowden’s wedding in the summer.

“At around 6:00 this morning, on the bus to the start of the NYC Marathon, I found out that Ciara had passed away,” she wrote in a post on Instagram.

“The strongest, toughest competitor and athlete I’ve ever come across and a fierce friend to anyone lucky enough to have some of her time, yet somehow she always found time for everyone,” she added, before finishing: “I thought about her every step of the way around New York today.

I gave it everything I had and I hope I made you proud, Ciara.” World Athletics president Sebastian Coe also paid tribute to Mageean, declaring that her loss “will be felt across the athletics community”.
